Fail and Meh Beauty Products for my Face

Assalamualaikum and Hi,

Before I committed into skincare routine, I have tried and tested a lots of products to banish my acnes and acne scars. I've been influenced by 'natural' skincare is safe, 'synthetic' is toxic. Yes, I also have tried natural remedies but nothing works. It makes my face itchy and irritated. The only natural remedies that I believe safe are just plain yogurt, honey, oat, turmeric. And I believe we can't use natural remedies everyday.

Here the list of 'Fail & Meh' Beauty Products for my face

From left: W.lab Sebum Out Finish Pact, Garden of Eden Rosa T Serum, Moogoo Full Cream Moisturiser, Eucerin Dermo Purifier Hydrating Care, Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion Milk, Hada Labo Hydrating Light Water Gel

1. W.Lab Sebum out Finish Pact
Back then, I can use powder pact like they are my bestfriends ever. But now, they are my enemies. I bought this because I want the mattifying effect since I use moisturizing sunblock. But this pact makes my face dry and whiteheads appeared. I realized that I spent too much in airconditioner room. That's why this is not suitable for me.

2. Garden of Eden Rosa T Serum
Natural skincare they said. And stupid me believe this is going to work for acne. It contains Tea Tree Oil, Rosehip Seed Oil, Vitamin E Oil and Grapeseed Oil. Sounds really good oils. But it's not working. I use cotton bud to apply on my acne, but it seems did nothing. Some of the acnes disappeared but they are coming back. And makes my face irritated. This product don't have ingredient list makes me suspicious about them.

3. Moogoo Full Cream Moisturiser
This one is too greasy for face. It's kind of thick cream that hard to blend. This one is full with oils especially sweet almond, olive and coconut oils which are not good for my acne prone skin.  The smell is delicious, smell of cow's milk. Packaging is really good. Now, I just apply this on my body. Quite good for body only. Check out the ingredients here. If you have really dry and unblemish skin, this will be for you.

4. Eucerin Dermo Purifier Hydrating Care
I bought this for my sister since she has problematic skin along with cleanser and toner. She likes the toner only. Now, she just use Eversoft Oil & Acne Control cleanser and use my Hada Labo lotion. Back to this product, this is quite heavy and greasy for me and my sister. Our skin still gets oily. This is not good moisturiser for us. The consistency is just like lotion. It should be lightweight. One more thing, they don't have the ingredient list. I tried search on the internet but got confused with another hydrating products. They have a lots of moisturiser products. I can't detect what's with this lotion's problem. Now, we use this on our body, hands, feets.

5. Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion Milk
This one is not the Japanese lotion / toner one. This one is really a traditional LOTION / emulsion one. The lotion (toner) is good for me even though there is not brightening effect, but still gives me hydration. With this milk, my face can be overhydrate or overmoisturise (is there any terms for that?) and leads to acne. This is might too heavy or the ingredients are not working well for my skin. I don't think arbutin is the problem because I have use the lotion only, there is no problem.
The best thing about this milk in trial size is the packaging. I put the photo below of the packaging comparison with Innisfree Green Tea Balancing Lotion.

Packaging comparison between Innisfree Green Tea Balancing Lotion and Hada Labo Shirojyun Lotion Milk in trial size

Hada Labo's packagings are so friendly, they even put enough description on the bottle. Full ingredient list, claims, directions in English all complete on a bottle even though for a small size. You can look how Innisfree bottle are just simple, with Korean hangul that I don't understand. Hada Labo bottle made from soft plastic. When open the lid, you can see the Hada Labo has small tiny hole to control the products, you can squeeze the bottle to force the product to come out. The Innisfree one is really bad. It was in a hard plastic bottle that you can't squeeze and you can't control the amount. I oftenly splurge the Innisfree lotion everywhere. In terms of effectiveness, Innisfree win.

6. Hada Labo Hydrating Light Water Gel
Hada Labo again. This one I totally know why it's not working for me. The content of the alcohol in this product is quite high. It is the second ingredient. At first, I just thought maybe alcohol in this product is 'nice'. Seriously, it is really really bad. Make my skin so dry, I even have dry patches until now. I am totally reject high alcohol content products right now. This gel suitable for oily-heavy teenage younger skin.

From Left: Laneige Sleeping Mask, Human Nature 100% Natural Sunflower Beauty Oil, Guardian Aloe Vera Gel, Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream, Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel

7. Laneige Water Sleeping Mask
Like what Hada Labo Shirojyun milk and Hydrating light water gel do, this overmoisturise my skin. It makes my skin soft and hydrated but breaking out. Until now, I am not a fan of Laneige because of this one product. Huehue. I can't confirm about the ingredients because Laneige sleeping mask formulation always change. So, I don't know what is wrong with this sleeping mask. I just receive the product without box, just this one tiny jar.

8. Human Nature 100% Natural Beauty Sunflower Beauty Oil
This one is not working because I use this as a moisturiser twice a day. Maybe I can customize my routine with this one by using as a makeup remover. Human Nature is quite good brand from Philippines, you should check them out here.

9. Guardian Aloe Vera Gel
Don't be fooled with the packaging. There is no way 100% aloe vera is going to survive in a container without preservatives. They stated CONTAINS 100% PURE ALOE VERA. It means that the aloe vera is pure and taken from the earth (roll eyes). Aloe vera is in the third ingredient and in powder form?
This are the ingredients:
Aqua, Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Powder, Tocopherol Acetate, Carbomer, Triethanolamine, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Methyparaben, Allantoin, Tetrasodium EDTA, C12-15 Pareth-12.
This one is not working same as the Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel. I just irritated from it.

10. Cetaphil Moisturising Cream
This is my fault because they already stated this cream is for very very dry skin. I have oily combination skin which is far from dry skin. Yes, I have dry patches but it is not that bad like your skin is going to crack. This one has heal my sister's eczema on her foot. The ingredients contain light mineral oil and sweet almond oil. My facial skin's enemies.

11. Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel
I have reviewed here.

Where did they go after you get irritated by all of this products? Of course body. Body is the victim for useless facial products. Muahahahaha. All this products are not working for me does not mean it is not working for everyone else. You can check out my skincare routine, which product I use and my skintype. Maybe now, my routine a bit change.

That's it. See another post! Bye, Wassalam.

Battle of Aloe Gels : The Faceshop 99% Jeju Aloe VS Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel

Assalamualaikum and hi,
I want to do review on 2 aloe vera gels from Korean brands. Since I don't have gel moisturiser, so I just use aloe gel as the last step moisturiser.

Right: The faceshop Jeju Aloe 99%, Left: Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel

1. The Faceshop 99% Jeju Aloe
They contain 99% aloe gel. This one feels really good on skin, just rubbing in the products on your skin, it will absorb well. Thisw gel has cooling effect and make my skin really fresh during daytime. It's good to wear in hot and humid country like Malaysia. When your face becomes really hot, you can apply this to lower your facial skin's temperature. At first I don't like the fragrance. As time goes on, it's not a bother to me.

The Faceshop Jeju Aloe 99% ingredients

From the ingredients, they stated this aloe gel truly 99% extract from the leaf. What can I ask more. I don't care about the other ingredients listed, they must be low than 1%. I don't freak out about the alcohol because it's really really low. My skin will breakout with high percentage of alcohol. But with this one, my skin did not breakout at all.

2. Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel
Contain 93% of aloe vera gel. This a little bit runnier than TFS. Apply this during day time, my skin becomes oilier in the couple of minutes. And when I use this during night, my skin feels dry and tight. After that my skin get rashes and irritated. This one was not soothing at all.

Innisfree Aloe Revital Soothing Gel ingredients

I am excited to try this because of the ingredients are alcohol and fragrance free. The ingredient list is simple. It also contains lots of herbs extract which I don't care. Since then, I used this on my body. Body's skin are less sensitive, so why not slather this on my hands, arms, neck, tummy, legs. Does not have cooling effect.

As you can see, I have TFS aloe gel in my routine as moisturiser. I tested a lots of moisturiser but most of them gave me irritation. I am always going back to TFS Aloe Gel. That does not mean high percentage are good for skin. Some skins can't tolerate for the high percentage, but they can accept for a lower percentage. Depends on a person's skin, which one suitable for them. Our skin's background history are totally different from each other. Innisfree and The Faceshop both are good brands that just based ingredients mainly on plant extracts.

See you another post. BYe. Wassalam

My Boring Skincare Routine

Assalamulaikum and hi,
As promise, I'll reveal my routine and which product I use. My routine is boring. I don't use any special ingredients like snail, argan oil, vitamin c, tretinoin or use special cleanse device like clarisonic, konjac sponge. The reason is I don't want to mess up my skin. My skin isn't a speciman. I don't apply any topical treatment for acne. I just use my routine to keep the acne from coming back. I still have mild acne even I am in late 20s. Currently, I am just building my basic routine while thinking add another beneficial ingredients.

I have discussed about skincare routine needed in here. My skincare steps are just double cleansing, double toning, light moisturiser and sunscreen. I use wash off mask or peeling gel occasionally. Actually, I am just lazy.
Here is my skin profile:
Age: 28
Skintype : Dehydrated-oily, Mild acne, Acne Scars (Maybe post inflammotry hyperpigmentation (PIH))
Skintone: Warm tone. I don't know my shades. You can look at my photo below. (I assuming MAC NC30-35)
Climate: Tropical, summer all year round
Country: Malaysia

I am not doing depth review for each product here. I will do it later for another posts.
Let's begin...

My Skincare Routine

All my cleansing products

1. Cleanser : Washing with Hada Labo (HL) cleanser. I used 2 of their cleansing products. HL Gokjyun (Moisturising) Face Wash and HL Shirojyun (Whitening) Face Wash. Depends on availability and price. I'll buy the one on sale. But, I favour the Shirojyun one because the gokjyun make my skin feel so tight. It's funny since Gokujyun suppose to be moisturising.

Left: HL Gokjyun (Moisturising) Face Wash, Middle: HL Tamagohada (AHA+BHA) Face Wash, Right: HL Shirojyun (Whitening) Face Wash

2. Exfoliating/pH adjusting Toner: Exfoliating my skin with HL Mild Peeling Lotion and then let it dry. I use 2 times a day. I don't think this is an acid treatment or exfoliant. I just can say this is just a toner with mild exfoliant properties.

Left: HL Gokujyun (Moisturising) Lotion (Rich), Middle: HL Mild Peeling Lotion, Right: HL Shirojyun (Whitening) Lotion (Light)

3. Hydrating Toner: After exfoliating, I just pat HL Gokujyun Lotion (Rich) about 5-6 drops onto my face. Pat pat until it absorbs into the skin. I already finished HL Shirojyun Lotion. For hydrating toner, I prefer Gokujyun. My skin crave for more hydration.

The Faceshop Jeju Aloe Fresh Soothing Gel
4. Gel Moituriser: I am using The Faceshop 99% Aloe Gel for my moisturiser. This is enought for me. But I am still looking for decent moisturiser. I prefer gel type. Maybe lotion/emulsion type also can go lah.

Left: Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunblock SPF50+ PA+++, Middle: HL Perfect UV Gel SPF50+ PA++++, Right: Biore Perfect Milk SPF50+ PA++++

5. Sun protection: I am currently using HL Perfect UV Gel for indoor and Biore Perfect Milk when I am at outside for too long. For more info about sun protection and depth review of products can be found here. I already finish Nuetrogena Ultra Sheer sunblock.

HL Hydrating Makeup Remover
1. First Cleanser: I use HL Hydrating Makeup Remover to massage my face for about 1 minutes. This allow me to eliminate all the oils, dirts and sunscreen residue on my face. This product is just an imitation of cleansing oil product. I have bad experience with cleansing oil, that's why I choose gel-like texture. Maybe later I will change to cleansing oil.

2. Second Cleanser: Using HL face wash. About 2-3 times a week, I use HL Tamagohada Face Wash as an exfoliating step.

3. Exfoliating/pH adjusting Toner: Swipe with HL Mild Peeling Lotion. I skip if I use HL Tamagohada Face Wash.

4. Hydrating Toner: Patting with HL Gokjuyun Lotion. Apply again if my skin feeling so dry.

5. Gel Moisturiser: Apply The Faceshop Jeju Aloe on my whole face.

Then, sleep. Good night.

Additional step

Left: Biore Perfect Cleansing Water (with fragrance), Right: Biore Perfect Cleansing Water 300ml

Makeup remover: Before ablution to perform prayer, I will remove my sunscreen first with Biore Perfect Cleansing Water. This product is just another micellar water. This is good, really hydrating. It contains Witch-Hazel which is anti-inflammatory astrigent.

*I advice Muslim girls to remove makeup/sunscreen during prayer time. Hydrating makeup removers or micellar waters are good for doing this job. You can apply sunscreen and makeup after praying.

Mild Scrub: Just few times in a month, I am using mild physical exfoliant with The Faceshop White Jewel Peeling Gel. This is great to massage our face. It's good and make my skin feeling so clean and fresh.

Left: The Faceshop White Jewel Peeling, Middle: Skin Food Rice Mask Wash Off, Right: Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Clay Mask

Mask : I don't really use mask. If I have times, I apply wash off mask for 10-15 minutes after cleansing at night. I have only 2 masks, Skinfood Rice Mask Wash off and Innisfree Super Jeju Volcanic Pore Clay Mask. The Skinfood rice mask has ability to brighten up skin but I think it should be use consistently. I can see the bright effect but temporary. Same goes to Innisfree Super jeju volcanic mask.

My main objective is to control oil. When I apply hydration product, I noticed my face become less oily. It is okay if the skin is oily but not too much. Normal skin has oil and water balanced. For oily skin people, don't scare to put hydration product on your skin. If you moisturizes well, your skin will become normal. I prefer to buy my skincare products offline. I don't know, my skin works better with all skincare products that I purchased offline.

All these 3 persons are me. You can see my skin color change due to my hijab color. This is NOT before and after photo. Left and right photos taken in artificial light inside a room plus I have my HL Perfect UV Gel on my face. Middle photo was at the outside, taken in natural light but I have Biore Perfect Milk on, you can see the whitecast. Take note I don't put any makeup on.

See you another post. Adios, Bye. Wassalam

Sun protection and Sunscreens Comparison

Assalamualaikum and Hi!
Today I want to talk about sun protection. As we known, UV rays from the sun cause damage for the skin. Long exposure to the sun without protection can make your skin burns or tan. For long term effect, you will see aging spot and wrinkles on your skin. UV rays have 3 types : UVA, UVB, UVC. UVA has the longest wavelength that can penetrate into the skin layer and cause damage inside the skin, the culprit of aging skin. UVB just cause damage on the surface of the skin that makes our skin burn and/or tan. UVC gets filtered by the ozone layer so you don't have to worry by this type of UV (unless your country has some hole in ozone layer or you stay at Mt. Everest). UV rays also can cause hyper pigmentation, worsening scar and lastly can lead to skin cancer. Just assume that UV rays can disrupt in skin repairing.

UV rays and sun protection depends on country climate we live in. Our skin color/tone also play role in protecting our skin. Fitzpatrick stated fairer skin (Type I-III) has higher chance to burns easily rarely tans, while darker skin (Type IV-VI) has higher chance to tan easily but rarely burns (source). I am consider myself in darker skin category Type IV.
For a Malaysian, we've been told that the sun is healthy, yeah it is healthy before 10pm. I advice you to get sun exposure about 10-20 minutes only. After 11pm, the uv index getting higher, the maximum uv index gets usually at 1-2pm.

UVA and UVB protection
When you buy a sunblock, make sure the label stated for the both protection. The number of SPF is just for the UVB protection. UVB is measured by multiplying SPF with the length of times taken for an individual's skin start to burns without sunscreen. For UVA protection you can see the PA or PPD ratings. Since I am living in Southeast Asian, I am used to PA ratings. I have never seen PPD ratings so far. More '+' on PA, more protection are prepared. PA ratings are used mostly by East Asian Country. In Europe, they used PPD ( I haven't use EU brand) and UVA seal. Take note that UVA can get through glasses and window. Please wear sunscreen indoor.

There are two types of sunscreen: Physical and Chemical. Physical sunblock ususally have zinc oxide and/or titanum dioxide. Zinc oxide dan titanium dioxide can protect from both UVA and UVB by reflecting the UV. Chemical filters works by absorbing the UV rays then turn them to heat energy. These are some examples of chemical filters:
UVA: Avobenzone, Tinosorb S, Tinosorb M, Mexoryl SX, Mexory XL etc
UVB: Octinoxate, Octocrylene, Homosalate, Uvinul T 150, Cinoxate, etc
You can find the rest filters at Skinacea.
To make chemical sunblock works, you should wait for 15-30 minutes before the sun exposure. Physical filters works just after the application. There are mix chemical and physical sunblock in the market, you also can go out right after the application.

Ouyang et al. (source) stated we have to applied 2mg/cm^2 on the skin to get the SPF protection that have stated on a product. If a sunscreen has SPF 50 and we just applied 1mg/cm^2, we just getting SPF26 for sun protection. Ok, it is not that bad. Maybe it is difficult to control the amount, just make sure the sunscreen lotion cover all skin area. Some sunscreen may turn greasy if we applied too much. Stop applying too much, apply the appropriate amount and reapply after 2-3 hours. This amount suggested are just applied to chemical filters. Physical sunblock might be stronger than chemical sunblock. So, you don't have to applied it too much to your skin, as long you reapply when expose to the sun.

My Experience & Review
Before I discuss my review, I would like to emphasize again, I have dehydrated oily-skin, which is really dry inside and oily outside. I live in Malaysia, a tropical climate country which is humid and summer all year round. My first sunblock is a physical+chemical sunblock which is Sunplay Skin Aqua UV Moisture Milk spf 50.

I don't have the ingredients because I already threw out the packaging. you can refer the ingredients here. Has both physical and chemical filters. This is the best formulation so far without alcohol and fragrance. The bad thing is this sunscreen was not comfortable on skin. Maybe it is too oily for me and it become greasy after a few hours if I stay expose to the sun. I used this when I wasn't aware of skincare. I did not remove this with makeup remover, I used cetaphil to washed my face and used apple cider vinegar as a toner (OMG! Sorry for my ignorance). I would like to buy and try again since my skincare routines are quite stable now.

I want to make comparison between this three sunscreens. I just realized all are in blue color tubes, yeah, I loike blue.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF50+ PA+++
This one has cream to gel like texture. Like a fluffy feeling. It is not oily but it can become greasy if you don't wait about 15-30 minutes before sun exposure/applying makeup.

Nuetrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Sunblock SPF50+ PA++ ingredients
From the ingredients, we can tell that this is fully chemical sunblock. It has UVB filters: homosolate, ethylexyl salicylate, UVA filters: butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane(Avobenzone). Octocrylene filtered both UVB and UVA. It has strong smell but it is not fragrance smell. Even if you applied by hand, the smell will still linger on your hands until the end of the day. I have this sunblock since last year. It is stated waterproof. Well, it is waterproof but not that strong. This is good for daily wear and outdoor activities if you keep wiping your face and reapplied afterwards.

i) the product comes out like fluffy creamy gel like texture. ii) spread out on the skin's surface. iii) blended into the skin.
It has no whitecast. But I can see a bit temporary brightening effect when I just applied it on my face. This 88ml products cost RM38~$9. This is value for money and affordable. My final verdict, this is good sunblock. I wear this everyday currently. I want to repurchase but I have 2 new unused sunblock waiting for me.

Biore UV Perfect Milk SPF50+ PA++++
If you spent most of the time outdoors, this is totally for you. A few Malaysians love this so much, they even using this as a daily sunblock. For nonsensitive skin, this is no problem for you. I got breakout and my skin was too dry when I used this by following the rule 2mg/cm^2. But when I just applied minimally, it feels good on my skin.

Biore UV Perfect Milk SPF50 PA++++ ingredients
From the ingredients, this is mixture of physical and chemical sunblock. UV filters: Zinc Oxide (physical filter), elthexyl methoxycinnamate (chemical UVB filter). Oh, it is just 2 filters.

i) the product is quite runny on my hand. ii) spread out on my skin. iii) blended with my skin
Actually, it has whitecast, but the photo didn't show any whitecast. Sorry, my camera quite bad. Price for 40ml cost RM27++. Around $7. If you follow 2mg/cm^2 rules, you might feel this is too much. But who the hell applied physical sunblock with 2mg/cm^2 rules? Many people replace this as a primer because of the mattifying effect. This sunscreen is ok for me. It will be the best without alcohol and fragrance. My skin don't have quite good relationship with alcohol and fragrance.

Hada Labo Perfect UV Gel SPF50+ PA++++
Finally, this is my favourite brand. But this sunscreen is my least favourite. Most my skincare regime consists hada labo products, from 1st cleanser to moisturiser. This is the only brand that has formulation without alcohol, fragrance and colorant. Well, not totally free from alcohol.

Hada Labo Perfect UV Gel SPF50+ PA++++ ingredients
This sunscreen type is mixture of physical and chemical sunscreen. I think more like chemical because titanium dioxide is kind of negligible. It has Octinoxate (UVB filter), Tinosorb S (UVB and UVA filter), Uvinul A Plus (UVA filter) and Titanium Dioxide (UVB and UVA filter). Of course it's focus on moisturizing effect. I can say I can't wear this as daily sunscreen. If I want to wear this, I should put a matte make up base over it. This one is better as an occlusive moisturiser than a sunscreen. It is really good for indoor. When I am out to the sun exposure, it melt. So, if you spent your time in airconditioner space or in a dry/cold country, this is good to go.

i) Product is like a gel texture with white color. ii) Spreout out on to my skin. iii) Blended in with my skin.
Hada Labo has their own sunscreen line (Air Aqua UV). Perfect UV Gel is not that strong to wear in hot and humid area. It is nonwaterproof. I am surprise this is the most expensive between the 3. 50g cost about RM50~$12. 1g for RM1. Bravo! You can see at the third picture, my hand is so moisturizing-looking. Thanks to hyaluronic acids.

How to reapply?
Since I am a Muslim, I don't have issue in reapplying sunscreen. Because we have times during prayer time which at lunch (for Malaysian time). To perform prayer, we need to take wudu (ablution) first. Hands, face, head and feet are the compulsory part we should wash during ablution.

This is the diagram if you want to understand (cr: google; keyword: ablution).
Water must be contact with all the part of the skin required. To make sure water must be contact with facial skin, makeup remover is useful for this job. 1st cleanser is not suitable to use. Avoid cleansing oils, because you required 2nd cleanser to wash off the residue of the oils. I suggest using cleansing water/micellar water because it's very mild and not required 2nd cleanser (means a mild standalone cleanser). After ablution, we can put sunscreen then makeup and pray. Or we pray first and then put sunscreen and makeup. We already used to it, it is not hard for us.

If you live in 4 seasons country, the time may changing. So, try remove sunscreen with micellar water or any hydrating makeup remover about 5hours gap. Then, reapply sunscreen.

Whoever and where ever you are, try make sunscreen as a compulsory habit if you have issue with your skin. Sunscreen might work for solving your issues. I don't want to say sunscreen is protecting us from UV rays 100%. You can choose not to wear sunscreen but stay away from the sun. Wearing long sleeve shirt. The best sun protector are clothes (include hats and caps) and shades.

Whew! This is such a long post. I guess I just stop here, before that here my cats:

Are you done? We are tired of your long post.
Ok, I am done. Here for more information about sun protection:

Exfoliant & Scrub (Bahasa Malaysia)

Kali ni saya nak sembang sikit pasal exfoliation/scrub.

Tapi keberkesanan masih dipersoalkan sebab tak banyak kajian dibuat. AHA dan BHA memang dah terbukti keberkesanannya. Contoh produk:
i. Paula's choice (AHA dan BHA exfoliant tapi sgt mahal)
ii.
Tertingat brand Avene pernah keluarkan exfoliant gel tapi discontinued. Lagipun sangat pricey.

Sebelum mula guna exfoliant/scrub. Pastikan 4 basic step dibawah kuat dan stable.
1. 1st Cleanser / Makeup Remover (oil-cleanser/ cleansing water / cleansing balm etc..)
2. 2nd Cleanser (cleanser biasa)
3. Moisturiser (hydrating toner, lotion, ampoule. essence, serum, etc..)
4. Sunblock / Sunscreen.

Terima kasih. Wassalam

My thoughts on Malaysian (Local) Skincare

Assalamualaikum and Hi!

Before I am going to open my cleansing routine entry, I would like to share about my thoughts on Malaysian (local) skincare.

As we know, Malaysia has tons of skincare created for Malaysian skin, some of them are failure. Just a few of them can be found in drugstore, example, Simplysiti which most products are formulated in South Korea. Most our skincare products that based on Japanese formulation can get passed into drugstore (remember Eversoft). I remember Syahirah, Shurah, Alaisyah.. but it seems this brands are going to discontinued soon. People always thought Safi is a local brand but it is not. Safi are based from India, the same company with Fair & Lovely. I once used one set of Safi Balqis range line (before Kiwi is added) and it was good and did not break me out. Lastly, Nutox is also a local brand. Sounds really fascinating and internatonal-like. I thought it was Japanese/western brand. But still it is actually joint-based with Japanese technology.

What about Local Skincare that has been sell online or in kedai/kiosk Jamu?
Kedai/kiosk jamu are shops/permanent booths which sell a lots of newbie/infamous beauty products. Products that cannot passed to sell in drugstore. As long they have permission from KKM (Ministry of Health), they can sell in here. This is the place to train newbie entrepreneur to sell their beauty products. Because there are a lots of procedure like testing out in the lab for safety and need to produce million units to sell in drugstore/store.

I also have experienced with online local product. Local products give positive reaction while using it. You can feel your skin so flawless and glowing without make up. But the worst thing is majority of them has rebound effect. You cannot stop using it until you die. Majority owner always think: just put all the natural things in that products and tadaa! 'Our products are really natural, organics and chemical-free'. Please slap yourself if you found this tagline. One more thing, about 'halal' thingy thing. I think we always heard 'Our products are 100% made by Muslim'. I am kind of sad with this. Made by Muslim but they claim 'This skincare is suitable for all skin types, you can get flawless in 3 days'. And then, when it is not doing what it claims, can I say that this is not what Islam taught us? Breaking promise. I met one product in Watsons called Kanebo Freshel, it says on the packaging 'Maybe not suitable for all skin types'. I think people also always found this warning on skincare products label in drugstore: 'Please stop if irritation occurs'. You can see the differences between skincare products sell in store and kedai jamu/online.

I want to talk about the formulation-wise. Most of the owners are just business minded. They don't even know what is in their product. As long, they get a lots of money and sell, it is enough.

Sunblock ingredients from a local brand

This is one from the famous Malaysian skincare products that has been around about 2-3 years. When I looked at the ingredients list for sunblock, my mind just popped up, is this really a sunblock? I don't find any sunscreen agent. What I know, alpha arbutin- lightening agent; vitamin b3- also known as niacin is a healing agents; pennywort extract - this herbs claims can heal disease (what is this doing here); licorice exctract - can healing eczema; sodium chloride - salt, thickening/flavoring agent/preservatives; aqua is just water; methyl propane diol - a solvent; cyclopantamethicone - silicone as a humectant. Where is the sunscreen agent? I did not even found any chemical sunscreen agent. They can rename this as healing cream and also can be use even better at night.

Product from WR empire.

WR empire is one of the Malaysian skincare brand that use homeopathy. I like their tomato soap, it is just made from tomato and rosewater. No colorant, no fragrance, no oils. What make me cringe the most with this brand is the price. The prices are ridiculous. Corrector cream oil is RM40 for 8g? I have bought this once, then finishing one tube and disappointed because it was doing nothing. It was not healing at all. But a lots of my friends like it and does wonder to their skin. Repurchase? Of course not. It just contains cocoa butter and almond oil. You can just buy those ingredients in store.

Until now, I did not found any good local skincare that comes from kedai jamu. Inform me if you know. Only Sendayu Tinggi can get passed to sell in Watsons. Still, I don't think their skincare is good but their makeup line is nice.

Final thought
Our skincare becomes better when joint or based with overseas company. Especially when joining with Japanese or Korean company. We know they are really good in cosmetics technology. I found that skincare product in drugstore/store/outlet are much cheaper. I will be really angry if I buy an expensive product and it does nothing. Lastly, skincare products depends on a person's skin, every skins' are unique. Important thing is being wise while choosing.

I have to go, thanks for reading and correct me if I'm wrong
Bye, Wassalam~

Beauty: Cleanser (that I have used) Biore, Sendayu Tinggi, Safi Balqis, Eversoft, Nourain, Shaklee Nutriwhite, Cetaphil, Moogoo, Hada Labo

Hi, it's me. This entry I am going to share my experience with all the cleansers I have used. Actually, I have this self-conscious feeling about my skin at age of 24 or 25 like that. Before that, I did not even care to wash my face. Of course I always washed my face with water while in shower. Sometimes, I just used whatever my mother bought. I did not even know what brand is, what the ingredients, is it safe?. As long it does its job. Even people around me always compliment me that I did not have any problem with my facial skin. That was before I aware of my self-conscious.

Ok, proceed to the cleanser. Cleanser is just a basic things that you need. It's not about being beautiful or glowing, it is just about being clean. I don't understand people who do not wash their face. You wash your body, but you do not wash your face? Face is the part of body that getting exposure the most. That's why we need a facial cleanser.

My first experience with a cleanser was Biore (blue bottle). I think I was 14-15 years old that time. I lived in a boarding school and saw alots of my friends having facial cleanser. Meanwhile, I am just using my body wash to wash my face (even hair). I was just feeling neutral with this cleanser, I like it because it has 'cool' feeling on my face. Maybe it has mint or menthol. I don't really know. It was old cleanser by Biore back then in 2002-2003. It was in blue tube.

I think it look like this. I don't remember.
After I finish this cleanser, I did not but any cleanser for about next 3 years. I just wash with water or with body wash or just some soap I found in bathroom. After I enrolled to a college, my mother bought me a soap. She said use this soap to wash my face. But I rarely used it. I used when I was feeling realy really really dirty. This soap is called Golden Herbs by Sendayu Tinggi. It contains honey and a type of mushroom which is called Ganoderma. I don't care about that mushroom, but I like honey.

Golden Herbs from Sendayu Tinggi
I used Golden Herbs for too long about 5 years I think, until I graduated. It does it job wonderfully. At that time, I did not have problem with my skin or my self-conscious is not alive yet. The bad thing about this soap, it kind of thinning your skin. My skin is quite young at that time. So, it's not really irritated or gave me problems. You know how young skin are oily-heavy and thick.

Next cleanser was from Safi Balqis, the ordinary one. And sometimes, when my Safi cleanser was running out, I'll bought Eversoft Deep Nourishing. My skin was still fine with Safi Balqis cleanser. It was really making my face look brighter. Same goes with Eversoft.

This is old packaging.
Again, the old packaging.
These are just cheap cleansers. I'm a cheapskate. I don't really spend my money on skincare.

Next cleanser are my beginning where my skin is getting so much problems. It was from a product that I found online. Looking at the amazing testimonials, I've order for one trial set of this product. It is called Nourain Beauty Care. The cleanser was quite good. When I was currently using this product, it was makes my face glowing and flawless. I was really amazed. But I stopped because it was difficult to find this product offline.

Nourain Beauty Soap
On the negative side of this soap cleanser, the soap was easy to melt. And quickly finish. Even though I have cut into 4 parts. I have to say honestly, I am disappointed using this whole product. It gave me rebound effect. Then, I bought Hada Labo Hydra & Whitening Face Wash. This one did nothing to me. My face were not getting better. I changed again to Shaklee Nutriwhite Gentle Deep Foaming Cleanser. Most expensive cleanser I had ever buy. It was about ~RM100. And this one also not a good cleanser for me. It was just a gimmick. Putting all the herbs that gives benefits and claim to be natural. The ingredients list is like an essay, lots of crap things that does nothing. This is worst than Safi Balqis.
Nutriwhite Gentle Deep Foaming Cleanser from Shaklee

Hada Labo Hydra & Whitening Face Wash

After that, I used Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser for all skin types. This cleanser is quite affordable. At first, it was really helping in fading my pimples. I used about 6 months, my face was getting worst day by day. A lots of acne, blackead, whitehead popped up. And they leave me scars. I don't really know what went wrong but one thing I disliked this cleanser was it didn't foam. Maybe my face were not clean enough without foam.
When I finish Cetaphil, I tried the natural / organic claim products. It was called Moogoo Fresh Goat's Milk Cleansing Bar. This one was just like Cetaphil, at the beginning it was good and then gave me trouble. But it was still good at cleansing.

Moogoo Fresh Goat's Milk Cleansing Bar
I stop my post here. All of this products are totally my honest review and experiences. I will post another entry about my cleansing routine and cleanser I am currenly used. It may effective for me but maybe it is not effective for you. It may not effective for me but it may effective for you. Oh, I forgot to tell, my skin type is normal-combination to oily. Sometimes can be dry. And I have big pores. Ugh, it is difficult to explain. Just to remind you I live in Malaysia (Southeast Asia), a tropical rainforest climate country where the temperature is 34 C at the max and 24 at the min.
Ok, Bye.

J-Dorama: Ouroboros (First 2 Episode review)

Assalamualaikum and hi!
I was wandering on KissAnime to find some anime to watch but there are nothing interest me. I didn't read any anime review or having effort to lookup what is the 'hottest' anime for this season. Just look at the anime title and poster photo make me cringe. Wtf with the sushi police? Sekkou boys? Naruto? Err, I've unfollowed naruto 9 years ago. Last anime I watched was One punch man for the first few episodes. I think it's quite good.

Then, I remembered I have a drama that I want to follow. It is called Ouroboros. I thought Ouroboros was Japanese words but it was Greek. Means a dragon ate its own tail.

Drama teaser
Drama started with two little boys, Ikuo and Tatsuya who lost their caretaker. They were living in an orphanage who own by a beautiful lady like me (perasan je) aka their caretaker. One night, their caretaker was killed. This two boys made promise to avenge their caretaker's death. This is how it works, Ikuo is working as a detective and Tatsuya is a yakuza. They found out the people who killed their caretaker are the elitist of the elite. It means they are super rich person which they could settle anything with money. Of course this two guys could not win over the elitist. So, both of them working hard to get on top over of this elites. Ikuo find opportunity and do anything to get promotion. For Tatsuya, I don't really understand what's he doing. People said he is doing business underworld. He owns a host club, checking stocks here and there. I don't know what stocks he checking though. I'm sure this Tatsuya guy is on the justice side. He always help Ikuo settling his case.

Main female character is not in spotlight for this first 2 episodes. She is a detective and Ikuo's colleague. Daughter of the Chief Inspector. That Chief Inspector looks like he is important person in the district. I suspect her father is one of the elites and involved with the kill. Huehue

This is how the case settled
The series have detectives-yakuza-killing-elites. Connect the dots and I can conclude this is just a detective dorama with weak plots of crime. Plots for the crime in each episodes are really loose. Each crime is settle by these two bros (Ikuo and Tatsuya), then they end it with a slogan. Kind of boring for the first episodes. I'll try continue to watch a few more episodes, maybe it will be getting interesting. who knows.

This is the problem when I get involve in drama/anime series. I am often getting bored for the first few episodes. But I still give chances to watch another episodes to see whether it is still relevant or not. LOL. One of the reasons I am attracted to this drama because of the actors, Ueno Juri and Shun Oguri. I saw my two favourite actors on same teaser, how can I ignore this.

I've finished my review on this 2 episodes of this drama. If you want to watch Ouroboros, you can watch it on KissAsian.

Oh, I forgot to tell, I just watched Shingeki no Kyojin Live Action movie. I have one word for this movie : DISASTER! No need review and not recommended.
This is totally honest review.

Facial Skincare Routine (Rutin Penjagaan Kulit Wajah) for Malaysian Skin

Assalamualaikum and hi!

This entry will be different than before. Forget about cats for a while. Now, I am going to write about skincare. I find it's funny because it is me who talk about skincare. #jangankecamsis
I just want to share what the things I know about beauty. Firstly, I just focusing on the part that we always see first: Face. Step to make sure our face flawless and glowing is easy. The step is :

Washing the face is just a basic thing. This should be enough for non-problematic skin, unless you are wearing make up. No need to put anything on your face after that. Cleanse your face with facial cleanser, washing face with only water are not helping in cleaning your skin.  Avoid using bar soap or body wash. This kind of soap usually have high pH. High Ph can damage acid mantle that have been functioning to protect our skin from bacteria. Low pH cleanser normally comes in tube. Best pH cleanser in range 5-6.

Steps of Facial Skincare (Langkah-Langkah Penjagaan Wajah)

This following steps are only for problematic skin such as dry to super dry skin, oily skin, combination skin and acne prone skin.  For non-problematic+normal skin people, please stay away from this steps. Basic steps are:
  1. Cleanse - I am already explain above, this is the basic of basic of basic steps. Choose cleansers that suitable with your own skin types. Oily skin may get along with foam cleanser. Dry skin should be clean by less foam cleanser. Acne prone skin could be use anti blemish cleanser.

  2. Simple toner. Example of toner. (source)
  3. Tone/Hydrate - After cleansing, we need toner or hydrating toner to prepare our skin for the next step. Normally, people use toner with cotton pad then swipe all over the face. Dirts can be seen on the cotton pad. Toner is suitable for oily skin and hydrating lotion is for dry skin.
  4. Moisturise - Moisturiser is needed to keep moisture on your face. Oily skin people are not favour of moisturiser. Especially, people who live in tropical country. For dry skin people, this is compulsory for them. Oily skin should skip this step or use water based moisturiser.
  5. Sunblock from Biore. Most beauty bloggers' holygrail. (source)
  6. Protect - This is the most important step. Whatever your problems are, please don't skip this SUNBLOCK / SUNSCREEN. You can skip toner or moisturiser but not  sunscreen. We need sunblock to protect our skin from UV rays. UV rays from the sun could damage into the deep layer of skin which makes your 'age spots' or 'sun sports' to be visible. I highly suggests use sunscreen contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Zinc oxide is highly recommended because it is known for low irritation to the skin and protect for full UVA and UVB rays
Additional steps:
Exfoliate/Scrub -  I've been questioning, does this step necessary. Cleanse is enough. But scrub is used for eliminating the dead skin cells. Why? Because our skin is generating in 28 days. So, we need to prepare space for the new skin cells to form. Exfoliate/Scrub should have done 2-3times per week. Oilier skin may need this often. Depends on the skin condition and products.

Mask - Needed to clean pores. Mask can be made from kitchen like vegetables, yogurt, fruits, honey and whatever. You can also buy it from stores. There are sheet mask, clay mask, peel off mask. Should be use after tone or cleanse about 15-30 minutes. Just use once or twice is enough.

Contoh cleansing oil dari Biore. Aku guna yang ini. (Source)
Cleansing oil / Makeup Remover - This is for people who are always wearing makeup. Cleansing oil is the best make up remover and also the first step to double cleansing, follow by foam cleanser.

Serum, Essence, Ampoule, Emulsion, Milk - Everyone know how korean skincare routine works, this is what we called layering skincare. Main purpose is to hydrate and moist your skin to the maximum level. All of these things are just moisturiser but with more active ingredients, cocentration and MARKETING. This step is suitable to apply when we stay in a cold weather country. If you stay in Russia, of course you need this step. For Malaysian user, I recommend for those are looking for solution to certain problems. Example, if you have spots you need arbutin or vitamin c, dry skin need hyaluronic acid and wrinkles can be solve by retinol. But you can also found this ingredients in moisturiser/toner/hydrating lotion/cleanser. Why you need a lots of things to put on your face.

Treatments - Acne problem can be solved by treatment gels or creams. Acne or pimples are easy to get rid but the hardest one is scar. For acne, you can find products contain benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid or sulfur. And the scar can be fade by Dermatix, Mederma, Hiruscar or you can just let it disappear by itself. Scar gels are just accelerating the fading process. Treatments should be apply after toner.

Eye cream - For those who are crazy for eyeshadow, eyeliner or any eye makeup, this thing is a MUST for you. Eye cream is not used to reduce dark circle. Dark circle can't be reduce unless you get enough sleep. Well, for people who are not interested in eye makeup, you can skip this. Ok. Bye eye cream.

Lipbalm - You don't want a dry, black color, or chapped lips. Put your lipbalm and then put vaseline to avoid any loss moisture on your lips.

Essential oils - Oils are good for dry skin. If you are too scared using moisturiser or you are too religious for 'natural/organic' products, you can just put oils to the skin. Oil cooking also can lah. I see a lots of people love argan oil. Argan oil is just the same level as grapeseed oil, jojoba oil or any non-comodegenic oil. Surprise me because mineral oil is non comodegenic, but maybe mineral oil does not contain certain 'benefits'. Beauty companies/ igers/ bloggers are selling argan oil because  it sounds so elegant, exclusive and sexy. And it is expensive. These are the best oils that I can think of are: jojoba oil, argan oil, olive oil, coconut oil, rosehip oil, sunflower seed oil, blackseed oil dan etc etc. Avoid using fragrance such as lavender oil or any citrus oil. Lavender is not good for skin though. (source).

Argan Oil. So sexy. (source)

'Natural/Organic' product?
There are millions skincare products in market. Please choose wisely. They claim the ingredients are 100% natural/organic. Let me tell you, 'Natural not always safe, synthetic not always harmful'. 100% natural are just on the label. There are cheap products are working as the same as 100% natural label products, Why? Because you pay for 100% natural/organic label. Such a waste. Same goes with hypoallergenic, non-comodegenic label (source).

Same goes with paraben. The contoversy are never ending. No research studies say parabens are dangerous. It was all just internet hyped. The worst thing about paraben is it gives irritation to skin but just a certain people with high dosage. Paraben used in the small amounts and it's really really weak. (Source). Fragrance is the only ingredient to avoid. Alcohol is acceptable in certain amount. Always look at the ingredient list before buying.

Bottom Line
As a Malaysian woman, I want to conclude that you don't need all of these steps. It's enough if you have Cleanser and Sunscreen. You can also skip the basic steps such as toner and moisturiser. I always read that most Korean need at least 10 skincare products. Look at the country, Korea is a cold climate country. They always need to hydrate their skin from time to time. Well, there are certain Malaysian suit with these layering skincare.

Application technique also play the role on a product effectiveness. While I was started using toner, I put toner on my palm and rub it to my face. Then, my face react negatively. After that, I just knew that toner must be used with cotton pad. For moisturiser, make sure the products fully absorb into skin. Just pat on to the face and slap gently until it dries. Same goes with serum, ampoule, emulsion, milk.

I just stop here, thanks for reading from the start until the end. I am not a beauty expert, this is just my hones opinion and few tips.

Thank you. Thank you Thank you. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Makanan Kucing dan Recommendations

Entry lepas bercerita pasal kucing. Kali ini kita sembang tentang makanannya pulak. Dah ada kucing, mesti ada makanannya. Huehuehue

1. Dry food atau dipanggil kibbles
2. Wetfood
For me, kibbles wajib ada dalam bekas makanan. Kucing ni bukannya faham bahasa. Untunglah kalau kucing korang dapat kata 'I'm hungry, please feed me'. Because of language barrier, silalah pastikan dry food sentiasa ada dalam bekas 24 hours

Ini dia kategori-kateogri makanan kucing (untuk kibbles):

1. Holistik/Super premium
*Apa benda pulak holistik ni. Makanan kucing pun nak berholistik bagai.*
Kategori ni adalah yang paling mahal sebab tak campur streoids, gandum, soya, pewarna, by-products etc. Selalunya mengandungi at least 30% protein dari daging haiwan (macam ayam, kobau, rusa, itik, kambing, lombu etc).
First ingredients should be meat.
Contoh senarai ingredients:-

  • Orijen (Cats & Kitten): Fresh boneless chicken*, chicken meal, fresh boneless salmon*, turkey meal, fresh chicken liver*, herring meal,) *fresh tidak pernah dibekukan
  • Taste of the wilds (Canyon River Feline)Trout, ocean fish meal, sweet potatoes, potatoes, canola oil
  • Acana (Wild Praire Cat & Kitten): Boneless chicken*, chicken meal, turkey meal, boneless turkey*, chicken fat

Hanya mengandungi 30-33% protein. Dicampur gandum, soya, by-products. Senang kata ia tak dilabel sebangai grain-free. Dan tidak dicampur pewarna. Dengan syarat, 1st ingredients should be meat. Contoh premium brand:-
  • Blackwood (Adult Catfood): Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Ground Grain Sorghum, Millet
  • Iams (Healthy Adult Original): Chicken, Chicken By-Product Meal, Corn Meal, Brewers Rice, Dried Beet Pulp
  • Royal Canin (Adult Fit 32) : Chicken meal, brown rice, corn, corn gluten meal, chicken fat

Contoh brand komersial (menipu kalau korang tak pernah dengar):-
  • Whiskas (Chicken & Turkey flavour) : Poultry by product-meal (Source of Glucosamine & Chondroitin sulfate), Ground yellow corn, Ground wheat, Corn gluten meal, Soybean meal, Animal fat (Preserved with bha and citric acid)
  • Friskies 7: Ground yellow corn, corn gluten meal, chicken by-product meal, soybean meal
  • Prodiet Ocean Fish Dry: Fish Meal (Ocean Fish), Corn, Soybean Meal, Rice, Poultry Meal, Corn Gluten
Korang tak perlu bersusah payah call pembekal untuk place order. Pergi je kedai runcit berdekatan seperti 99 speed mart, tujuhsebelas, mydin. Jangan cari kat kedai kasut pulak. Tak pasal-pasal ada tapak kaki kat muka korang.

My POV & Recommendations

Bukan semua orang mampu beli makanan premium apatah lagi holistik. Itulah selemah-lemah pilihan. Nak up sikit boleh tengok kat first ingredients must be chicken or chicken meal or something like that lar. Harga pun up sikit. Maybe between commercial and premium are the best choice.
